The Towns of the River Route


The River Route represents a cooperative effort among traditionally competing municipalities that has drawn national attention for its vision. The municipalities that have joined together to create the River Route include:

 

Beverly

Beverly works to bring new life to its waterfront, pursues a mix of attractive high-density housing and commercial development, plus focuses on the clean up of a local superfund site and the redevelopment of the area surrounding the Beverly-Edgewater Park rail station. The ongoing redevelopment project consists of restoring the downtown, as well as the Waterfront Promenade.

 

Beverly is home to 2,651 residents and includes 0.58 square miles.

 

 

Burlington Township

The Township offers easy access to major highways, including Routes 130, 541, 295, and both the NJ and PA Turnpikes. Burlington Township features a successful mix of retail, commercial, and industrial establishments coupled with a diverse mix of housing opportunities. Mayor Stephen M. George was recognized by the Burlington County Chamber of Commerce as its “Public Voice” in promoting business and industry in Burlington Township. In accepting he award, Mayor George said “Burlington Township will continue its business-friendly philosophy to attract and keep good commercial and industrial enterprises.”

 

Burlington Township is home to 22,700 residents and includes 14.72 square miles.

 

 

Cinnaminson

Cinnaminson is an established suburban community located directly across the Delaware River from the Far Northeast sections of Philadelphia. The municipality includes eight well-maintained parks, a variety of religious institutions, community organizations serving people of all ages and a significant industrial complex. The former Cinnaminson Mall will be reborn as the Cinnaminson Town Center—a 40-acre site expected to bring in more than $17 million in new commercial ratables. Access to the Center and other businesses in the area will develop with the completion of a major highway improvement project Route 130.

 

Cinnaminson is home to 15,449 residents and includes 7.4 square miles.

 

 

City of Burlington

The former capital of West Jersey and once the third largest port in North America, the City contains New Jersey’s first recorded European settlement, the State’s oldest Library, New Jersey’s oldest Fire Company and the first Pharmacy in New Jersey. The city was a stop on the Underground Railroad and was also home to the State’s first weekly newspaper.

 

Burlington City is home to 9,736 residents and includes 3.73 square miles.

 

 

Delanco

An attractive river community located at the confluence of Rancocas Creek and the Delaware River and between Riverside and Beverly, Delanco Township is home to the Delanco Federal Savings Bank headquarters, and has become the headquarters and one of the many distribution centers for the renowned Dietz & Watson Company. The community is served by the Hawk Island Marina and has seen new age-restricted development at Newton’s Landing. Six major redevelopment parcels are owned or controlled by the municipality.

 

Delanco Township is home to 4,224 residents and includes 3.2 square miles.

 

 

Delran

Delran, deriving its name from the Delaware River and the Rancocas Creek, borders Delanco Township, Riverside Township, Moorestown Township, Willingboro Township, and Cinnaminson Township, as well as the Delaware River. Delran enjoys the major improvements along Route 130, including the transformation at The Greens at Delran Center—just south of the Bridgeboro area—into a major shopping center offering a variety of brand name retailers. The former Old Millside Shopping Center is undergoing a similar transformation as a new Target store and additional retailers take its place.

 

Delran is home to 17,283 residents and includes 7 square miles.

 

 

Edgewater Park

Redevelopment plans in Edgewater Park comprise a 217-unit active adult residential community, including an on-site medical building abutting Route 130. Edgewater Park Crossing is a retail center anticipated to break ground soon. Located on Route 130 at Beverly-Rancocas Road, the center includes over 65,000 square feet of space for use as retail stores, offices, restaurants, day care, and a bank.

 

Edgewater Park is home to 7,968 residents and is 2.86 square miles.

 

 

Florence Township

Haines Industrial Center, which straddles both Burlington and Florence Township, continues to attract major warehouse/distribution companies to Florence, including BJ’s Wholesale, Sports Authority, and Home Depot. These companies occupy more than three million square feet of commercial and industrial space, with plenty of room to grow. At build-out, this industrial park will provide jobs for an estimated 15,000 workers.

 

Florence Township is home to 10,746 residents and includes 9.65 square miles.

 

 

Palmyra

Located on the Delaware River, across from Philadelphia, Palmyra can be accessed by the historic Tacony-Palmyra Bridge, Route 73, and Route 130. Palmyra has a traditional downtown business district, including retail stores, cafes, and professional offices. Palmyra consists of mostly older homes on tree-shaded streets and was designated a Tree City USA in 2003. Borough redevelopment plans include a Senior & Community Center, as well as a considerable expansion to athletic fields and recreational facilities. The Borough is also redeveloping the former drive-in movie theater site on the southbound side of Route 73. The Palmyra Nature Cove, situated along the Delaware River, attracts birdwatchers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts throughout the region.

 

Palmyra is home to 7,600 residents and includes 2.39 square miles.

 

 

Riverside

A diverse, working class community, Riverside features a “small town Main Street” business district comprising residential units over first floor commercial establishments. This downtown district is served by the River LINE Station and is surrounded by three redevelopment sites—the Watchcase site, the old Tanbel’s Mill site, and the old Zurbrugg Hospital site. Slated for predominantly residential development, these three sites will together create more than 1,000 new units, bringing an influx of new residents.

 

Riverside is home to 7,911 residents and includes 1.56 square miles.

 

 

Riverton

A small town of sidewalks with gas lamps and a Victorian-style appeal, Riverton is home to the Riverton Yacht Club—one of the oldest, still active yacht clubs in the country. Redevelopment has been underway with The Shoppes of Riverton, anchored by a CVS, a new bank, and up to six new retail tenants. In the town center is Riverton Square, a mixed-use facility to include professional and medical offices. Downtown revitalization also includes a new plaza, brick sidewalks, and War memorial improvements.

 

Riverton is home to 2,759 residents and includes 95 square miles.

 

 

Willingboro

Featuring access to Route 130, I-295, the NJ Turnpike, Willingboro offers five recreational parks, a golf club, seven elementary school, two junior highs and one high school. There are also 25 churches within town limits. The old Willingboro Plaza has given rise to a new town center, which is now home to the major drug distributor Medco and other retail businesses, as well as the local library, a branch of Burlington County College, and new townhouses. The former Sears Roebuck building has been converted to office space for a 90,000 square foot Delco Development, Lourdes, Rancocas OBGYN, and executive and virtual office areas.

 

Willingboro is home to 33,008 residents and includes 7.8 square miles.
